In the previously held Pinoy Gaming Festival (October 26-27, 2013), the LevelUp! Games booth, small as it may be, quietly pushed their new game into the market.
Their latest acquisition is HEX: Shards of Fate, the first MMO-Trading Card Game in the world, by Cryptozoic Entertainment. HEX is a novel idea, considering Cryptozoic’s forte is making tabletop / board games. This MMO-TCG is actually a fully-funded Kickstarter project, reaching US$2.3 Million at the end of its funding goal last June 7, 2013.
As described in their Kickstarter page:
The first ever real MMO/TCG for your PC & MAC
From the team that brings you the World of Warcraft Trading Card Game, HEX is a free-to-play game that combines the compelling collectible and strategic game play of a trading card game (TCG) with the amazing community and storytelling aspects of a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game (MMORPG) to create an entirely new gaming experience: the MMO/TCG.
Not surprisingly, one of the backers for the HEX Kickstarter project was LevelUp! co-founder Phil Kahiwat. he has purportedly donated US$10,000 on the campaign, making him a “Producer-level” backer. This prompted Kahiwat to meet up with President and CCO of Cryptozoic, Phil Jones. We can surmise that the meeting gave LevelUp! the opportunity to distribute the game in the Philippines and Latin America.
On the other side of the world, HEX TCG will be distributed by EU-based publisher Gameforge (also currently running Elsword UK).
Here it is, the largest piece of this announcement and the element that needs some specific explanation: our new publishing and platform partnerships with Gameforge and Level Up!
Gameforge is headquartered in Germany and the leading MMO publisher for Europe. They have over 400 million registered players across 75 countries.
Level Up! has offices in the Philippines, Brazil, and Latin America. As the number one game publisher in those areas, Level Up!’s commitment to quality and customer service is unparalleled.
Our arrangement with these two publishers is great. They totally get it when it comes to what we are trying to accomplish, and to further illustrate this, the contract in place with these companies puts all decision making in my hands.
With HEX TCG going worldwide, Cryptozoic is now planning international tournaments, divided into different regions: US, EU, Philippines, Latin America, China, and Russia. Winners of the 6 regions will vie for the championship spot at the global stage.
Updates on Closed and Open Beta schedules to follow as this story develops.
