Meet the Real Deckard Cain
A recent revelation by a gamer in Reddit has the Diablo population in awe and amazement.
If anyone knows the name Deckard Cain, it’s from a famous character in Blizzard’s Diablo series, most especially in Diablo II. After a rescue mission in the first chapter, Deckard Cain becomes integral to the character’s journey from then on. Deckard Cain, or Cain the Elder, is last human Horadric Mage. But to everyone else, he’s the NPC who identifies unknown items, and a source of good gossip. His famous and probably most memorable line is “Stay awhile and listen…”
Meet the REAL Deckard Cain.
Deckard Cain Elder is a sixteen-year old boy currently residing in Illinois, but hailed from South Dakota. In an apparent string of luck, his father, an avid Blizzard fan, joined a contest 15 years ago that had very vague details. All the game company divulged was the fact that after a said deadline, they would pick a random entry to win the prize. The father sent a postcard with his son’s name on it, instead of his own. Six months later, the Elders received a package from Blizzard containing a yellow envelope, a copy of Diablo, a blue statue of Diablo more than a foot tall, a black hat with the Diablo logo on it, and a large Diablo T-shirt. Inside the yellow envelope was a letter addressed to Deckard and personally signed by Bill Roper, the producer of Diablo.
Strangely enough, his first name was taken from Blade Runner, while “Cain” and “Elder” are his mother’s and father’s surnames respectively.
Nowadays, the 16-year-old Deckard is living a normal life as a teenager should. He admits that he has received no other special privileges from the Blizzard team aside from the package he received many years ago. Like many other Blizzard fans, Deckard patiently waits for the Diablo III release by spending time playing StarCraft II and World of Warcraft. He has also recently created a new Paladin character in Diablo II.
Deckard goes by the Reddit name Blooberrys.
