Playkultur News: Today in Final Fantasy

Jan 18, 2011

Direct from the Square Enix 1st Production Department Premiere, we’ve got great news for all Square Enix fans out there!

First off, I’m sure you guys and gals have read mixed to scathing reviews of the seemingly-linear Final Fantasy XIII. Well, aside from Final Fantasy Versus XIII as Square’s saving grace, the gaming company will also release Final Fantasy XIII-2, a direct sequel of the first XIII game. Photos below show Lightning sporting new threads and weapon design. The game will be released by Winter 2011 (Q4).

Next up is another game from the Fabula Nova Crystallis, Final Fantasy Agito XIII. In this premiere, the title was aptly changed to Final Fantasy Type-0, in order to establish its own name as a separate series. The game has a completely different action pacing than its XIII and Versus XIII counterparts. Type-0 will be released for the PSP console, and will be a 2-disc (UMD) game. More than 30 voiceovers will be heard in the game. A multiplayer online function is presumably available as well. No word on a western / English release yet.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII will be a Playstation 3 exclusive

The highly-anticipated Duodecim Dissidia gets a demo release starting today, January 18. For 300 yen, players can download Dissidia Duodecim Prologus Final Fantasy. It also features Aeris Gainsborough as a non-playable assistant character. Sorry, Aeris fans… Our prayers to have a fully-controllable, fully-functional, and healthy Aeris weren’t answered… We’re left to ogle at Aeris while being controlled by the game’s AI. -manlytear-

Kingdom Hearts 3D for the Nintendo 3DS is subtitled “Dream Drop Distance.” Players get to switch between Sora and Riku regularly in the game.

On a lighter note, the 3rd game in the Parasite Eve franchise was already released in Japan last December 2010. The 3rd Birthday features our favorite heroine cop, Aya Brea in another “cinematic action RPG.”
