Puella Magi Madoka Magica Portable Coming Soon!
In this Playkultur article, I will be presenting the first few peeks to Nitroplus and Namco Bandai’s new upcoming game: Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica Portable (魔法少女まどか☆マギカ ポータブル)!
Based on the original anime production by Studio Shaft, in cooperation with Nitroplus, which became a huge successful hit in Japan and across the world; they have now cooperated with Namco Bandai to bring a new perspective to the series with the upcoming game. The game will be a 3D tactical turn based RPG game with elements of visual novel gameplay. The game revolves around the story from the series with added content straight from Gen Urobuchi himself.
The game is to be released on the Sony Playstation Portable game console promises plenty of replay value with its rogue-like dungeon crawler set-up. The game is basically split up into two parts, the ADV visual novel part where the player has the freedom where to roam around the city and talk with other characters to expand the story. The dialogue will be fully voiced with voice actors from the anime reprising their roles. Another unique set-up is the ability to make decisions in order to branch the story from the anime. This will build unique story-lines and explore other key aspects in the story and create scenarios and expositions not revealed in the anime or other related media. Gen Urobuchi will personally supervise the scenarios in order to create a different experience in the game depending on the player’s choices. Cut-scenes and special scenes will still be done by Shaft. Several familiar scenes will have new footage as well as new, never before seen, animation to discover. Even the dialogue has been rerecorded with expanded dialogue to enrich the exposition for the story.
You can also use the map location to move to a witch’s location which will prompt the game to switch to its dungeon mode and advance the story. Here, players must traverse through tiles on a turn by turn basis with unknown amount of enemy familiars in each stage. Here, players must tactically use their terrain and skills to defeat enemies before they surround and overpower you. You will get to choose the character they want to control or form a party and switch the active character as you see fit. And just like in the show, doing attacks will consume MP and darken your Soul Gem, so prudence and wise decision making come into play.
Of course, by the end of the dungeon will always be the boss battles with the witches themselves. Familiar faces from the show will make a return with other witch battles having more screentime and expanded abilities.
The game which is scheduled for release on March 15, 2012, already has pre-orders lined up for its limited edition box and its standard retail box. The limited edition comes with a Figma of Madoka Kaname in her school uniform, a special Blu-Ray disc containing never before seen animated clips as well as artwork, a Homuhomu handkerchief, a Kyubey pouch, a clear card holder, and the limited edition box cover together with the game.
