Ragnarok Online: “Malaya” Map Revealed!

Sep 2, 2011

A recent update in kRO’s (Korean Ragnarok Online) Sakray server revealed elements of the game yet to be released to the general gaming public. After nearly a decade of Ragnarok Online’s online existence, the wait for a map based on the Philippines is finally over! Dubbed “Malaya” (Filipino word meaning freedom), the new town has a rustic Filipino-Spanish architecture and familiar references to well-known markers defining the Filipino identity. Familiar locations in the Malaya map include a monument bearing a close resemblance to Rizal Park.

You saw it here first, folks!

The surrounding field maps also house new Philippine-based monsters with levels ranging from levels 100-150. The dungeon, still to be named formally, bears the filename “ma_zif.” It resembles an abandoned hospital reminiscent of the old Corregidor Island. The MVP monster for Malaya is also still unrevealed at the time of this writing. However, the new monsters are named and modeled according to Philippine folklore. From the patches, the following names are shown:

JT_BUNGISNGIS
JT_ENGKANTO
JT_MANANANGGAL
JT_MANGKUKULAM
JT_TIKBALANG
JT_TIYANAK
JT_WAKWAK
JT_JEJELING
JT_BANGUNGOT_1
JT_BANGUNGOT_2
JT_BUWAYA
JT_BAKONAWA_1
JT_BAKONAWA_2
JT_BAKONAWA_3

Filipinos familiar with the list above may see and realize one type of monster not included in Filipine folk tales, but is instead a portmanteau of the humble Poring species and the local subculture known as “Jejemons.” How the Jejeling looks like is still best left to our imagination… at least until the sprite is revealed in the next update.

Further inspection of the patch data also reveals that Malaya bears the map “job_ko.” This new map is presumed to be the job change map for the Ninja’s second class: Kagero and Oboro. Skill names for the Kagero and Oboro are listed below, sans the descriptions of course:

KO = Both Kagerou/Oboro can use it.
KG = Only Kagerou can use it.
OB = Only Oboro can use it.

I suggest that maybe the town/city should look like Vigan City in Ilocos or Cebu City or the Walled City of Intramuros since Spanish colonizers left us too much influence. and there should be Sabungan ^_^

It would be fun if the boss monster for the Buwaya monsters would be Lolong since it is the biggest crocodile in the world. [approx. 21 feet]

Sana meron ang bading/bakla/crossdressing male ang NPC in Malaya. Like ones (the badings and baklas) in real life.

No, not Urduja or Lapu-Lapu. =p

I like the idea, but somehow it felt like the map Hawaii. The sprite and skin looks very slim and dull to me. I wish that the editor will continue to edit the maps and add depth and details to map. Go Pinoys!

  13. Yay! No recycled/recolored monster sprites. Thanks Gravity

  14. The Mistress /

I have a feeling a lot of pRO players will hunt the Buwaya to death! =))
