RTMI: Ubel Blatt
Once upon a time, a kingdom was under a threat of invasion by Wischtech, an enemy who possessed more advance technology. To avoid more unnecessary bloodshet, the emperor summoned fourteen brave men tasked to negotiate with the enemy — they were called the Fourteen Lances of the Empire.
As the journey goes on…
Three have fallen…
Four have betrayed the wishes of the Emperor, killed by their comrades and called them as the Lances of Betrayal…
And the remaining seven managed to come back and to bring peace to the land, and people called them the Seven Heroes…
This is the story known by the people and believed to be the reason why they are living peacefully today. But twenty years later, a half-man, half-fairy named Koinzell appeared with the goal of killing the Seven Heroes of the kingdom[cannot reword without being lost in translation]. Rumors say that this man wields the same fighting style of the Blade Master, Ascherit, one of“The Lances of Betrayal”.
Ubel Blatt, a manga made by Shiono Etorouji, is published in Square Enix’s bi-monthly manga magazine, “Young Gangan”. Even though published in a shounen magazine, Ubel Blatt was categorized as Seinen due to its mature themes.
Colocoy thinks:
I was looking for something interesting to read when I first saw this German-titled manga. And as a fan of Middle Earth inspired fantasy stories (hence Lord of the Rings), I find Ubel Blatt very interesting. Using a half-fairy (YES A FAIRY) as a main character, of course anyone will underestimate him. But the thing is, he can kill you as fast as Batousai of Rouroni Kenshin. Interesting isn’t it?
As for the art, the style gives you the feeling of a Western comics but the fantasy concept itself has the Eastern idea in it despite the middle earth theme. For example, Koinzell is a demi-fairy but his special weapon / technique is called “The Black Sword”, where large blades sprout on his right arm andcan only be used every time he is under the moonlight. Overall, despite its poor popularity, Ubel Blatt is a very interesting manga which I highly recommend for those who like Middle-Earth themes and Suikoden-like stories.
