Square Enix’s New Stuff
Here’s a lineup of Square Enix news for everyone. But let me spoil you now: No, there’s still no news about Final Fantasy Versus XIII and Agito XIII. At least, not yet. But, there’s still a handful of neat stuff. Glad to know the guys at SquEnix are getting busier and busier.
To kick things off, let’s drop the big one. What was thought to be a PS3 exclusive in Japan (with the PS3 bundle and all… which I wasn’t able to purchase, by the way!) seems like a contradiction now. An achievements list of Final Fantasy XIII just went live on the Japanese X360 site, all in its Kanji glory. It’s relatively shorter than the PS3 trophy collection, but it does solidify speculation against previous assumptions.
Speaking of Final Fantasy XIII, a Piano Collections album was recently released. The 10-track compilation is now available for download at the iTunes store for $9.90. The sheet music book will be available on August 20. So keep those fingers crossed until then… literally. Plus, here’s a preview video.
You can also visit their official site to catch up on more info.
By the way, Square Enix US just got a new President and CEO named Mike Fischer, a 20-year veteran in the gaming industry. He was previously affiliated with Sega, Namco, and most recently, Microsoft. Considering the influx of releases, Fischer’s first few days at Square will be time well spent. He replaces John Yamamoto for the position, who is now serving as an executive advisor.

In other news, Square also announced a new Final Fantasy title for the Japanese mobile market. Entitled Final Fantasy Legends: Warriors of Light and Darkness, the game is shaping up to be a homage to the classic 8-bit Final Fantasy games. A teaser site went online, and Famitsu has a few screenshots for everyone too (sample shot below, taken from Famitsu). Don’t expect this game to get any release outside Japan. Remember Final Fantasy VII’s Dirge of Cerberus mobile game? Or Before Crisis? Yeah, that’s it.

Okay, enough with the Final Fantasy news… Next up is Legend of Mana coming to the PSN. In a Twitter announcement by Shinji Hashimoto, the Mana game will be released in PSN this coming July 28. It’ll cost ¥600, and would be a 365mb file.

Last but not the least, a “sweet reveal” according to the PR lady from Square. Tactics Ogre, the awesome tactical RPG released way back in 1995 for the SNES, is making a comeback with its remake for the PSP. At the helm of its development are key people from the original Tactics Ogre, Final Fantasy Tactics, Vagrant Story, and Final Fantasy XII.
The game will be revamped in 3D, however, it’ll still be faithful to the original with its 2D sprites and isometric overhead camera angles. Sounds will be remastered, plus the game’s music will have 15 new compositions. New characters will be added. And a new Wheel of Fortune system to aid players in character development and battles.
Apparently, the remake was retitled from “Let Us Cling Together” to “Wheel of Fortune.” Any semblance from Pat Sajak’s game show is purely coincidental. It does, however, screw with the search engine results.
No definite date has been announced. Tactics Ogre will be available for the PSP.
Oh by the way, Square Enix will be releasing a Play Arts lineup for Halo: Reach. Yep, you read right. Expect the Play Arts line to be released this Fall 2010, with the second volume early 2011.
