Amazing Spider-Man Super Preview

May 17, 2012

Keeping the hype up for the Spider-Man reboot, Columbia Pictures released a whopping 4-minute preview of the web-slinger’s return to the big screen. The lengthy preview is basically a mash-up of every other trailer released previously.

The Amazing Spider-Man reboot is a different take on the Spider-Man series, particularly the Ultimates version of Peter Parker. In this story, Peter gains his spider powers at an earlier age, during his high school days (compared to the mainstream version, where Peter was already in college). The spider costume has been revamped to a more modern look. Plus, we get to see Peter Parker rely on mechanical webshooters instead of the organic ones we’ve seen in the Maguire/Raimi films.

This storyline also pursues Peter’s question on the whereabouts of his parents. It introduces Dr. Connors/The Lizard as his first antagonist and is seemingly related to his father and also to the events that led to Peter becoming Spider-Man. True to the comics also, the movie introduces Gwen Stacy, Peter’s first love prior to Mary Jane Watson.

What’s not visible in any of the trailer is Peter’s life-changing moment when Uncle Ben died. Martin Sheen has been cast in this integral role, but none of the trailers have hinted at Peter Parker’s life-changing decisions to be related to the loss of his Uncle Ben. If the film stays as faithful to the comics as possible, this event should not be overlooked. It bears a great impact on Peter’s life, much like DC’s Bruce Wayne witnessing his parents’ death as a catalyst for becoming Batman.

The verdict on The Amazing Spider-Man will fall on the professional and fan critics alike once the movie heads to theaters on July 3rd.
